WTA - SINGLES: Tenerife (Spain), hard - 1/8-finals
Cristian is a young 23-year-old Romanian tennis player who is currently having a good time, we can expect her to break into the world top 100 soon as she has been doing quite well lately. Although she is used to playing more on clay, she is also performing well on hard court (5/4) or indoors (11/4). She last played in Nur-Sultan, where she reached the semi-finals after successively knocking out Vikhlyantseva, Burel and Krunic, only to fall out against later winner Van Uytvanck. Here in Tenerife, she played in the qualifiers, where she was dominant against Barthel. In the 1st round, Cristian beat Zidansek after a three-set battle (7:5, 4:6, 6:1) and thus has an open path to an interesting success in this tournament.
The 27-year-old Slovakian Schmiedlova, on the other hand, has been struggling a lot. If she doesn't start picking up points, she will soon drop out of the top 100. Schmiedlova was quite successful at the US Open, where she made it all the way to the 2nd round from qualification, but then came three defeats in the 1st rounds in Karlsruhe against Bodnar, Luxembourg against Diyas and Indian Wells against Konjuh. She broke that streak here in Tenerife, where she beat Juvan in three sets (4:6, 6:1, 6:4) in the first round.
In this match, I will believe in a better actual form of the Romanian, who in my opinion has enough talent to beat the more experienced Slovak and score another successful tournament.
