Women's World Championship is slowly finishing and there is no doubt about the final between USA and Canada. Now we are in semi-finals where Canada will face Switzerland and few hours earlier there is the first semi-final: USA - Finland.
These teams met once in the group stage and the score was 3-0 for United States after solid performance, but as it was, they could have scored more! From what I have read, Finland had terrible power-plays and when 5vs5 on the ice, it was all about USA. They outshooted Finland 39-10 (women need more shots to score a goal, which is understandable as they have less power in the shots).
USA national team was favorite in the group, but they suddenly failed the last match against Canada (1-5) and I think that just added to their motivation and awaken the beast. In the quarter-finals, they smashed very defensively-minded Japan 10-2 (shots 61-12) and I feel they will continue this trend, not as much as this will be Finland but I still feel Finland will have harder time than in group stage meeting.
Finland finshed the group A third behind Canada and USA, that was expected standing, but they disappointed many fans in the quarter-final against Czech Republic though advancing. The score was only 1-0 and it was very even match where Finland women feared about score until the final siren. Czech Republic outshooted Finland 29-20!
I think any of teams have no clue how to surprise North American teams as they are by far on different level, they could just try to lock the defense and rely on goalkeeper and counter-attacks. I would believe that surprise could have come in the group stage, but I see it very unreal for USA to blow in the semi-finals, when they are one step away from revenge against team Canada and two steps away from winning the GOLD.
