Montreal was the team that really brought a big surprise to the Stanley Cup battle last season and made it all the way to the finals with their team play. This season I wouldn't expect any a repeat of last year.
Montreal have gone a huge hit to the team's lineup this season, where they will face a big problem and that is that they lost their team leader. That's captain Weber, who's been sidelined, due to health problems, his career for one year. They also lost good defensive players like Gustafsson and Merrill. They also lost a lot of experienced players like Perry, Staal, Tatar, plus goalie legend Price had to have knee surgery and it is not yet certain if he will be able to start the season. Of course, they will get other good players like Dvorak, Hoffman or Wideman from the KHL, but I don't think these additions will fill the holes in the team.
Toronto, on the other hand, haven't gone as many changes as Montreal and the practical core of the team has remained the same. The biggest losses were probably in players like Hyman and Thornton, but I think they came as replacements for Toronto rather than losses. Toronto added goalie Mrazek, who will battle for the number one spot with Campbell, which will motivate both players to perform better. The other major addition was Nick Ritchie, who can easily jump in the top two elite forwards.
Toronto will have a really great offense that you don't want to go shorthanded against - Marner, Matthews, (who should be fine for the first game of the season after wrist surgery), Nylander, Tavares and now Ritchie.
Although, the most recent H2H from last season are coming out more for Montreal. So the composition of the teams for this season makes me play the favorite of the game Toronto.
My bet:
Toronto Maple Leafs @ 1.83 (bet365)
