Copa del Rey
Today we look to Spain for the Copa del Rey 1/16-final between Gijon and Villarreal.
At home, Gijón plays in La Liga 2, Spain's second highest competition, in which they are in 12th place with 28 points after 22 matches. They have a negative score of 22:25.
In the cup, the hosts have knocked out Union Club Ceares 1-0, then Alcorcon 2-1 after extra time.
The last five games (including the CdR) have given Gijón a 1-3-1 and a 5-4 score.
Villarreal are having such an average season, after 19 rounds they are 8th in La Liga with 28 points. In these matches the visitors have scored 31:20, making them the third best attack in the whole competition.
Villarreal have been going through the cupreally smoothly, first beat 8:0 Victoria CF, then 7:1 Sanluqueno.
Villarreal are in incredible form at the moment - they have won their last five games (including against CdR) by a hard to believe score of 22:4, more than four goals scored per game.
In this match I'm picking Villarreal to score +1.5 goals, that odds seem really high to me considering the kind of football Villarreal is playing. Moreover, coach Emery doesn't have a habit of saving his players too much, most of the mainstays play in the cup and are supplemented by maybe three players who otherwise don't play much. Villarreal will of course miss the players who went to the African Cup of Nations (Aurier, Mandi, Dia and Chukwueze). A question mark hangs over the start of Paco Alcacer, who normally starts in the Copa del Rey. But despite these absences, I think Villarreal will leave nothing to chance, Emery will traditionally field a strong line-up and the visitors will secure their participation in the next stage of the Cup. Gijón is a more than acceptable opponent and at least two goals are a "must" for Villarreal.
My bet:
Total Goals - Villarreal: Over 1.5 @ 1.80 (bet365)
