Europa Conference League - Group Stage
Slavia are doing great things in league, they haven't lost 52 games in a row, but as it turned out in the cup preliminaries, international level is something else. The home team will face an extremely good opponent in the first match of the Conference League, which is team from Bundesliga, Union Berlin.
The guests have a very good form too. Including the preliminary matches, the German side has not lost 15 matches in a row, which is no coincidence. Union have a very good defence, but the team struggles sometimes in offence. However, Slavia will miss a big number of defensive players (Hovorka, Kúdela, Kolář, Holeš), so the way to the home team's goal is a bit more open.
Union can play up very quickly. Among the biggest dangers will be the experienced Max Kruse, the Japanese Haraguchi, who was in Hannover colours last year, and the Nigerian Awoniyi, who caught the eye in Belgium.
Slavia does not have a number one striker at the moment and for them is it really big problem. On the other hand, there is a question mark over their most productive player Schranz.
Slavia is definitely strong at home and better than in away games. A nice example would be the 2 games against Leverkusen in the EL group. Leverkusen is a very similar team to Berlin at the moment and they played 1-1 in the Bundesliga together in August. Slavia beat Leverkusen 1-0 at home but even though Leverkusen played from the 22nd minute with 10 players and the game was more than even and if there wasn't a red card, I think Leverkusen would win. In the rematch, Leverkusen had already won 4-0 at home and Slavia was in much better form than at the moment.
I think Union Berlin has a better team with better form than Slavia. Berlin now has a streak of 14 games without a loss and beat Monchengladbach 2-1 at home a few days ago!
