The first and simple reason is the actual quality of the teams. Calgary is currently in seventh place in the Western Conference with 18 points after 14 games with a 44-32 score. In recent games, Calgary is not doing as well as they did at the beginning of the season and some sort of crisis has settled on them, as they have lost 4 of their last 5 games. But it doesn't change the fact that they have very good forwards in their lines (Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Lindholm, Monahan...).
Ottawa is not in a very good situation this season, as they are currently in last place in the Eastern Conference with 9 points after 14 games and a score of 36:48. This statistic is of course based on the quality of team, which I don't want to disrespect, because it certainly has quality, but it will take a season or two for the young players to get the necessary experience.
Tonight Ottawa managed to win 6:3 at home (to my surprise) against Pittsburgh, with the young Batherson shining in particular, having 4 points in this game. But otherwise it's also mostly losses. It was their first win in the last 5 games, so in some short term form they are in the same form as their opponent today.
But in my opinion, their opponent today has more quality and more experience. Taking into account that Ottawa players don't have to move anywhere and will play the next game at home, but the recovery time is quite short (about 19-20 hours), I'm leaning heavily towards the away team to win, because they have a really great a first line, and keeping up with them the whole game will be a serious strain on the Ottawa players' stamina.
Ottawa knows it on home ice against Calgary, having not lost a single game in their last 5 meetings. But this season and with the current situation, I'm definitely leaning towards Calgary to win, coming in rested and with a huge desire to win and get back on the winning streak from the beginning of the season!
My bet:
3-Way: Calgary Flames @ 1.71 (bet365)
