CHALLENGER MEN - SINGLES: Sibiu (Romania) - Qualification, clay - Semi-finals
It's a risk here, but I'll still take a pick on Frunza in this odds. The Sibiu tournament starts, and if any of the challengers on the calendar are notorious for strange runs and wild results every year, it's this one. It is also true that the home players here are regularly very strong and sometimes play far beyond their limits.
Frunza with a 42/17 overall score is not having a bad season at all, he has reached the finals twice this year (winning once) and even though he is currently 5 losses in a row, I wouldn't make it a complete tragedy. Last week in Bucharest he troubled Horansky, against whom he had his chances in the first set and he shouldn't have been too unhappy with the 6:7 / 4:6 result, especially since Horansky is playing great tennis this week and is in the final of the tournament.
Krutykh is also doing very well with a 38/18 score this year, like Frunza. He has an ITF title, played SF in Nur-Sultan and recently added a home QF from Kiev where he beat, for example, Luz. In Bucharest he finished in the qualification, but he managed to take a set from Hemery, so I definitely take note of his quality. But I don't see that much difference between him and Frunza to make the Romanian an outsider with odds @ 2.55.
Although the Ukrainian is some 300 places higher in the rankings, he is still for me also more of an ITF level player (although he is one of the top players there), but Frunza has shown this year that he can get good results.
My bet:
Nicolae Frunza @ 2.55
