Europe: World Cup Qualification
In the 2022 World Cup qualifying match for Qatar, I believe Slovakia players will say goodbye to the unsuccessful qualification with a win in Malta.
Malta is ranked 173rd in the FIFA rankings. The value of its playing squad is EUR 6 million. Only the pair of Teuma (St. Gilloise) and Satariano (Frosinone) play in a non-home league. They are fifth in the table with a 1-2-6 score. They earned points for a 3-0 home win against Cyprus and a 2-2 draw in both Cyprus and Slovakia.
For comparison, Slovakia are ranked 40th in the FIFA rankings and their squad is worth about 120 million euros. They are third in table with a 2-5-2 score. They won 3-0 against Cyprus and 2-1 against Russia, drew at home with Malta, in Cyprus, twice against Slovenia and in Croatia, and lost in Russia and at home against Croatia.
The last match ended 2-2, but first of all it was a sample underestimation of the opponent, which should not be repeated today. In the 20th minute Slovakia were down 0-2 and even though they dominated game, the winning turnaround never came. But they have won the previous 6 matches against Malta and 5 times even with a clean sheet.
The Slovaks presented very good performances in qualification. In both games with Slovenia and in the match in Russia they were better. After the last match, the coach of Slovenia Matjaž Kek said : "I said before this match that Slovakia is playing the best football in the group. Your team was unlucky, both against the Croats and in Russia. We were lucky against Slovakia at home, you have something to build on."
I believe that the Slovaks will finally add a good result to a good gameplay and will be able to beat the football midget.
