After 31 games played, Red Wings are in 8th place in the Eastern Conference with 33 points. Detroit has a negative score of 88:104 in these games. The home team's season is going so halfway - they were counting on a better point total, but in the Atlantic Division, Detroit is still in fourth place, but Boston will probably get ahead of them, three points behind and five games behind. Detroit last played a game before Christmas when they beat Devils 5-2, before that they lost to Carolina 5-3, beat Islanders 2-1 and lost to Colorado and St. Louis.
Visiting Washington is in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference with 45 points after 32 games played. In those games, Washington has a 113:84 score and ranks among the top offenses in the Eastern Conference. In the Metropolitan Division, the visitors are in 2nd place behind Carolina, while Capitals have a three-point lead over Rangers in 3rd. Washington beat Predators 5-3 yesterday, before Christmas they lost to LA Kings and Chicago, and beat Winnipeg and Buffalo.
Missing:
Home team Detroit will be missing nine players - Fabbri, Nedeljkovic, Rasmussen, Rowney, Smith, Stecher, Stephens, Vrana and Zadina.
Visitors will have to do without seven players - Cholowski, Fehervary, Jensen, Mantha, Schultz, Sprong and Vanecek.
The two teams have met twice this season - once Detroit won 3-2 after overtime, then Washington won 2-0. Just for the record, Washington hasn't lost to Detroit in the regular time in 17 games in a row.
In this game, I'm picking the visiting Washington to win in regulation time. Detroit hasn't played since December 19, this will be their first game after the break. Both teams are struggling with injuries, but I think Detroit is worse off, as it will have to do without nine players who are otherwise regular starters (except Stecher). Another factor that plays into Washington's hands is that Detroit has one of the worst defenses in the entire conference, and that should be good for Washington's second-best offense in NHL. Last time on Detroit's ice, Washington won 2-0 and I believe they will build on that win tonight.
My bet:
3-Way: Washington Capitals @ 1.83 (bet365)
