Just like last year, Shakhtar Donetsk was assigned to Real Madrid and Inter Milan. Shakhtar won eight out of 12 points with them, but it was not enough to qualify for the play-offs, as they lost twice with the group outsider Mönchengladbach. This year, Sheriff Tiraspol is outsider of group and if Shakhtar wants to think about advancing, they cannot afford the same mistake this year.
The Moldovan champion is making his debut in the Champions League, qualifying for the group against four opponents (Teuta, Alashkert, CZ Belgrade, Dinamo Zagreb) who conceded only two goals in eight matches! In my opinion, Belgrade and Zagreb were greatly underrated. Tiraspol definitely has some quality, but Zagreb really shouldn't have lost 3-0 to them! Still, you can't compare it with Shakhtar, who are definitely better than Zagreb and I really don't expect Tiraspol to win by 3 points and add another miracle to the club's history.
It is the solid defensive performance that adorns the teams coached by Yuri Vernydub. When he led Luhansk in Ukraine, only in one of the team's twelve games in European Cups did more than two goals. Sheriff will be relying on a secure defence in today's game as well.
Anyway, Shakhtar is still the favourites, having knocked out Genk and Monaco in the qualifiers, and I believe they will win today and take three points from the first round
Prediction:
Shakhtar Donetsk to win @ 1.90 (bet365)
