CHALLENGER MEN - SINGLES: Montevideo (Uruguay) - Qualification, clay - Final
This match will offer us a duel between Spanish tennis player Nicolas Alvarez Varona (403) and Francisco Comesan (528) from Argentina.
Alvarez Varona is a 20 year old tennis player, a former World No. 7 junior and is currently at his ranking maximum. He can play on hard, but he is strongest on clay. He won the title at home in Santander this year and played the final in Alkmaar. He also played great at the Challenger in Barcelona, where he qualified and beat Lehecka or Slovak Horansky in the main event. His last appearance was in Guayaquil, Colombia, where he finished with Etcheverry after the second round, which was decided by a third set tiebreak. There he defeated Matos in the 1st qualifying round.
Comesana is a 21-year-old player and is 6 positions away from his ranking high. He has played 5 final futures matches this year but will have to wait for his first title. His challenger high is a 1st round from Buenos Aires, where he finished in the 1st round to M. Cuevas. There he beat 19-year-old Fumeaux Buena.
In this match, the Spanish tennis player is a big favourite for me. He's in good form and has had some great results recently. Comesana retired to Portugal's Cacao at the Curtea de Arges tournament in mid-August and since then he has only played at his home challenger in Buenos Aires about a month ago, where as I mentioned before he finished in the 1st round. So it's possible that he's not quite 100% health-wise.
