CHALLENGER MEN - SINGLES: Antalya 4 (Turkey), clay - 1/8-finals
This match will offer us a duel between Dominican tennis player Nick Hardt (350) and Javier Barranco Cosano (292) from Spain.
Hardt is a 21-year-old tennis player and is one position away from his ranking maximum. He is mainly a clay court player and this year he has been doing well on futures, winning 4 titles (2x M15 Antalya, M25 Belgrade, Denia). Challenger tournaments are not going well for him though, and out of 8 attempts he only managed to get past the 1st round of the main event once, and that was here when he beat Dougaz and Dominguez last week and then lost to Borges in the quarterfinal. This week he took on Ukraine's Krutykh in the opening round here.
Barranco Cosano is a 23-year-old player and the highest he has ever looked at was 273rd in the world rankings (August 2019). He is an orthodox clay court player and has won 2 titles this year (M25 The Hague, Gandia). However, unlike Hardt, he also has results in challenger tournaments. In Lüdenschied, Germany, he beat the likes of Forejtke, Mena and narrowly missed out to the local Altmaier in the quarterfinal. In Warsaw and last week also here he improved his best even more, when he went one round further and played semifinal and beat good clay players Roca Batalla, Ilkel, Jiana (Basic, Borges, Klein in Warsaw). This week he had a smooth 2 set win over the talented Austrian Misolic.
In this match, for me, the Spanish tennis player is the clear favourite. He is playing very well this year and, unlike Hardt, he is able to assert himself in challengers, which the Dominican has not managed to do so far.
