CHALLENGER MEN - SINGLES: Murcia (Spain), clay - 1/16-finals
The odds have jumped up a bit more, and I'm definitely going to give Lopez San Martin a try. He's an orthodox Spanish clay court player. He has a very good 43/17 score this year, which has translated into 3 ITF titles. Alvaro struggled a bit at the beginning of the season, but by the end of April he was on a roll and suffered only 2 losses in his next 22 matches. A month ago in Barletta, he lost in the qualifying with Piraino, but then he made it to another final at the ITF and didn't do badly at the Seville Challenger either. Although he finished in the 2nd round there (lost 2:1), he still gave a good performance against Andujar (93.) and if he can at least follow on that, Ritschard shouldn't be an unbeatable opponent for him.
Born in Zurich, currently playing under the US flag, is quite a good player, but he is not a world-class clay court player. In August, he surprised by reaching the semi-finals in Liberec, where he beat Lehecka, but since then his form on clay has not been great. In the following 3 tournaments on clay, he managed to get only 1 win, beat the now tragic Ortega, but otherwise lost to Uchida and Chrysochos and got beaten by Blancaneaux. And he is more likely to move from the indoor, as he played in a tournament in Biel last week. There he managed 3 games, but in the Round of 16 he was quite easily beaten by Sousa, who himself is far from ideal form.
It's not a sure bet, but the home ground and the surface speak for Alvaro, who I think should be the favourite in this match.
Alvaro Lopez San Martin to win @ 1.83 (bet365)
