Deportivo Alaves have only managed to point against a struggling Getafe (1-1 at home) in their last five matches. Alaves has lost its other four matches, including a cup match against third-tier CD Linarés (1:2). Before Christmas, Deportivo even suffered an unpopular "five" at Villarreal (2:5). No wonder Alaves is only 18th in the table (4-3-11). They will fight to improve their position in the Basque derby against Real Sociedad on Sunday, with a new coach. Javier Calleja has been replaced by the more experienced Jose Luis Mendilibar.
The visitors are much higher in the table - sixth, but even they are not doing well now. They are currently on a streak of four league defeats in a row with an overall score of 1:10. In addition, there have been reports in the Spanish media that 13 positive tests for covid were recorded in the away team after the Christmas break, although no names were specified. It is therefore difficult to predict the composition of La Real's squad for this derby.
Either way, the home side, combined with the poor form of the visitors and the effect of the new coach on the bench, gives Alaves a decent chance of a point. I'll bet on Alaves not losing.
